Why Proper Medicine Storage Matters
Many people don't realise that improperly stored medicines can lose their potency, become chemically altered, or even become unsafe to consume. A medicine that appears fine on the outside may have already degraded inside due to heat, humidity, or light exposure.
According to pharmacological research, medicines stored above their recommended temperature can degrade significantly faster ā sometimes becoming useless or creating harmful breakdown products.
The Five Enemies of Medicines
Understanding what damages medicines helps you store them correctly:
1. Heat
Chemical reactions in medicines speed up with heat, accelerating degradation. Most medicines should be stored below 25°C (77°F). Avoid storage near stoves, windows with direct sunlight, or appliances that generate heat.
2. Humidity and Moisture
Water molecules can break down active ingredients in tablets and capsules. Liquid medicines may become contaminated. Never store medicines in the bathroom, kitchen, or near sinks.
3. Light
Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates the breakdown of light-sensitive medicines. This is why many medicines come in brown or dark-coloured bottles. Store these in their original containers, away from direct light.
4. Air
Oxygen can oxidise and degrade medicines. Always keep caps tightly closed. Cotton wool inside bottles should be removed after opening ā it can attract moisture once the seal is broken.
5. Children
While not a chemical threat, children's accidental access to medicines is one of the leading causes of paediatric poisoning. Always use child-resistant closures and store medicines out of sight and reach.

Special Storage Requirements
Syrups and Liquid Medicines
Most syrups should be stored at room temperature (15ā25°C). Shake well before use. Reconstituted antibiotic syrups (prepared by adding water to powder) typically need refrigeration and have a short shelf life of 7ā14 days ā always check the label.
Tablets and Capsules
Keep in the original blister pack or bottle until use. Transferring to other containers exposes them to moisture and contamination. Silica gel packets in the bottle absorb moisture ā do not remove them.
Injections and Vaccines
These almost always require refrigeration between 2ā8°C. Never freeze unless specified. Vaccines are particularly sensitive to temperature excursions ā even one freeze-thaw cycle can render a vaccine ineffective.
Eye Drops and Ear Drops
Most should be stored at room temperature and used within 4 weeks of opening, as they can become contaminated after this period.
Checking for Degradation
Before taking any medicine, inspect it for signs of degradation:
- Tablets/capsules: Unusual colour, odour, crumbling, stickiness, or powdering
- Liquids: Discolouration, cloudiness, strange smell, or separation
- Creams/ointments: Separation of oil and water phases, unusual colour or smell
When in doubt, discard and replace.
